Sachem donates food for 1,700-plus families

December 16, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Sachem High School East and Sachem High School North combined to gather a district record 1,746 boxes for this year’s Thanksgiving food drive. Sachem North set a school record with 1,408.

The boxes of food will be distributed to homes across the Sachem community with the help of Brookhaven Interface and the Lighthouse Mission.

Sachem North’s famed “Dirty Dozen,” a group of dedicated students who work vigorously to raise money and build boxes of food, out together 725 boxes on their own.

Thanks to the generosity of one Sachem alum from the Class of 1994, who wishes to remain anonymous, a donation of nearly $2,000 came in to churn out hundreds of boxes at North.

“It’s not about number, it’s about feeding families,” said Sachem North Student Government co-advisor Jonathan Chiaramonte, who benefited from one of these boxes 23 years ago as a boy growing up in the community.

Sachem East Student Government advisors Bill Kropp and Matt Rivera are in charge of the boxes for their school and hosted an event on Monday in the building to load the food boxes and turkeys onto trucks.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger and this year it was just remarkable,” said Chris Olsen, a co-advisor for Sachem North’s Student Government.
